Canadian Press

The Canadian Press is a Canadian news agency established in 1917 as a vehicle to distribute Associated Press material to Canadian news media, mainly because it was very difficult to spread news across such a huge country, covering many time zones. It was important around this time to tell the news from overseas during World War I. Today, it is owned by many of Canada's own multimedia content provider companies. A French service was established in 1951. The CP has over 600 offices around the world and employs over 300 journalists.

Broadcast News is an arm of the Canadian Press. BN is the primarily broadcast section of the company, while CP focuses on print articles for newspapers and the web.

CP and BN continue to distribute AP and APTN material to Canadian news media.

Canadian Press is a private co-operative owned and operated by its member newspapers; however, due to the consolidation of ownership in the press in recent years, the dominant partner in the agency was previously Conrad Black's newspaper empire. To a lesser extent, CanWest Global Communications is now its dominant member.
