Carroll Campbell Jr. (b. July 24, 1940), served as Governor of South Carolina from 1987 to 1995. From 1979 until his election as Governor, he served in the United States House of Representatives, where he was the first Republican to represent South Carolina's 4th Congressional District since Reconstruction. From 1995 to 2001, he served as President and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers. In October, 2001, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at the relatively young age of 61, since most cases are diagnosed in people age 65 or older.
