Colorphobia

Colorphobia is the irrational fear of a particular color or people of a particular color.

History of the term

The term had its origins during the antebellum period in the United States. Frequently, it was cited as the major shortcoming of white abolitionists during the abolition movement by those who were considered its beneficiaries. It therefore most often came into use relating to social relations in the Northern U.S. Frank J. Webb 's 1857 novel "The Garies and their Friends " was the first to address the topic of colorphobia as it relates to race relations of urban areas in the northern United States and was the second novel written by an African-American.
