Utah State Route 201

Utah State Route 201 is a freeway/expressway located in Salt Lake County. It begins at the intersection of 2100 South and State Street (US-89) in Salt Lake City and continues westward along 2100 South to 300 West. There is then a break in the route and it begins again at the southern interchange of I-15 and I-80, and heads westward along the border of West Valley City and Salt Lake City as a freeway. At approximately 5600 West the freeway dips southwest into Magna and is downgraded to an expressway. It continues west through the northern reaches of Magna and enters barren territory. It passes by refineries and a large smokestack that is taller than the Empire State Building and curves around the northern end of the Oquirrh Mountains. It then terminates at I-80 near the border with Tooele County.

The freeway portion of U-201, known locally as the "21st South Freeway" or simply "201", provides an alternative to I-80 when needed and also is very important for the residents of the west side that work in Salt Lake City. Current plans call for the freeway to be extended all the way through Magna due to increased traffic counts, especially from rapidly-growing Tooele County, while the rest of the freeway will be expanded to six lanes.
