As already mentioned, it's produced to attack invading bodies. The reason it must be broken down is because, uncontrolled, it would turn on healthy cells, and oxydize and destroy them as well.

Cells responsible for fighting infection and foreign invaders in the body (your white blood cells) make hydrogen peroxide and use it to oxidize any offending culprits.
