How can protosciences cross over to the field of true science? what is the role of scientific method in proving or disproving the validity of a protoscience?

It may seem odd to those of you who think of them as huge, aggressive turtles who will snap off a persons finger on a whim, but there are people who raise them as pets with great success, and getting them to breed in captivity.
Owners claim to teach them tricks, they can recognize individuals, and show a devotion to their owner.
These are the traits that could be worked in such a program:
-size/weight...though some might prefer a big breed
